The EU might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans imposed by the United States against five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported France in criticizing the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider existing cultural and political conflict between Washington and Europe.
